They're grubby, freezing cold and if the bathrooms work, they could do with a dousing of disinfectant. But Otago University students love their filthy flats.
The rigours of university life in Dunedin have been a rite of passage for generations of students, but it could all be about to change.
First to go, the local drinking haunt Gardies. It was bought up by the university as part of its plan to clean up the less seemly elements of university life.
But its not just Gardies in the firing line. The Vice Chancellor says some of that student housing around the university feels like a ghetto and it plans to sort that out as well.
So how bad is it? Close Up sent Matt Chisholm to check out some of the worst flats - flats attracting a premium price.
