The Department of Conservation is facing accusations of carelessness, after several kiwi moved to a reserve for safety were killed by predators.

Two months ago 30 kiwi were moved from Little Barrier Island to a Wairarapa reserve in the hope they would flourish and breed.

But the opposite has happened - at least 10 of the birds have been eaten by predators and DoC has gone into public relations overdrive, saying everything is OK.

However, a former DoC staffer says nothing could be further from the truth, with claims the kiwi are being killed because the DoC traps being set for their predators are not being checked and managed.
