It is remote, so be warned. Cell phone coverage is hard to find in some parts. It can be blisteringly hot and numbingly cold. And Aucklanders are heading there in their hundreds.
It is number 16 on New Zealand's must-do list: it is the Central Otago Rail Trail, an old train track that became a gravel bike trail. And, as the Government looks to create a national cycleway in a bid to boost the economy, Close Up headed south to see if the rail trail really is paved with gold.
Close Up reporter Jendy Harper looks at the trail and spoke to the man who suggested the national cycleway to Prime Minister John Key.
