The Kiwis who inspired a Grey's plot

A Bay of Plenty family's struggle with cancer has inspired a storyline in the hit US television show Grey's Anatomy.

In an episode to screen this weekend, the show addresses the issue of hereditary stomach cancer - and lengths carriers of the cancer gene must go to, to avoid dying from the disease.

The mutant gene that causes the cancer was discovered by a team of New Zealand scientists, and they are thrilled the issue will be put before millions of television viewers worldwide.
