If the rain doesn't come soon, Kaitaia will be out of water in two weeks' time.
Locals are being forced to shower only every second day and to refrain from flushing the toilet.
It is a kind of third world problem not expected in New Zealand.
The solution is not easy though - the district council wants to start pumping more water from the local river, but the regional council says "no" for environmental reasons.
