Fans fund Kiwi singer's album

She has never been near a record company, lives in Hokitika on the West Coast yet people are think she will be a star.

They are so confident of that, that 22-year-old Katie Thompson has been given over $US50,000 to her to produce an album.

All that money was raised on an online music site called Sellaband - where music lovers, not record companies, decide on your talent and how much they are prepared to invest in your future.

One anonymous investor stumped up $10,000.  Others' gave smaller amounts for a stake in Katie's future.
