The statistics are appalling: of the thousands of women who lose their breasts to cancer in New Zealand, only a quarter of them have breast reconstruction. To make matters worse, many of those women have had to wait up to five years for reconstructive surgery.
In a report to new Health Minister Tony Ryall, obtained by Close Up, even the Ministry admits it's a concern. Fiona MacKinnon is one of the lucky ones: She only waited two years for a double breast reconstruction, but during that time she has had strangers questioning her gender. However, she has also learnt to love her body, with or without breasts.
She talked to Close Up's Robyn Janes, while Mark Sainsbury interviewed Clinical Director of Elective Services Dr Ray Nader, and plastic surgeon Dr Stephen Mills, live in the studio.
