Dogs are hairy, slobbery and often have big floppy ears, but some dog owners like to think they and their canine companion share their good looks.

So much so, that in Auckland this weekend, there is a competition to find the most convincing dog and owner look-a-like couple.

It follows contests in Wellington and Christchurch.

Is there anything in it? Or are they barking up the wrong tree?
