Everyone loves a bargain, it is just human nature. And with all this talk of recession a canny eye is a useful thing to have.

But how low are you prepared to go: Day old cheese? Week old ham? Month old mayonnaise?

A new discount store with outlets in Wellington and Auckland is selling dated stock at bargain basement prices.

The operators do not hide the fact.

But when it is that cheap in these tough times, will cash strapped consumers think about their health before their back pocket?

And if one health concern is not enough, how about the bulk buys on chocolate bars, chips and sweets.

Michael Holland goes shopping for a bargain, while Mark Sainsbury discusses the health concerns with Glen Neal from the New Zealand Food Safety Authority and nutritionist Rene Harris.
