He's one of the star turns of the Auckland Festival but Tim Minchin nearly bombed.

People just didn't get his quirky musical act.

His repertoire included Inflatable You - his ode to a pneumatic girlfriend.

Then the Aussie comedian picked up awards at the Melbourne and Edinburgh Comedy Festivals and the hard times were over.

Tim Minchin performed one of his songs for Close Up.
