Ever tempted to make a donation - well there's no shortage of choice.

There are 23,000 registered charities in New Zealand. And last year we handed over $1.1 billion. How much made it to the charities and how much was soaked up by the middlemen? Earlier this week we showed you how Epilepsy New Zealand netted only two and half cents from every dollar you gave. An extreme case? Perhaps, but our investigations found many other charities recover only thirty cents in the dollar and some text charity drives have actually cost them money.

So who can you trust? Tonight we investigate the fundraisers and find out the best way to get bang for your charity buck.

Robyn Janes with a Close Up investigation and Mark Sainsbury speaks to James Austin from the Fundraising Institute NZ  and Nathalie Hofsteede, who has researched methods of fundraising and their cost effectiveness before launching her own online fundraising website.
