A brave paramedic's life-saving decision

As a paramedic, you would expect to come across some gruesome situations, but spare a thought for Johnny Mulheron.

By the time Johnny had made his way to forestry worker Chris Williams, the situation was dire. Chris had been taken out by a two tonne rolling tree stump in the remote Marlborough Sounds, leaving him with a 30cm gash to his thigh and a broken pelvis.

After raising the alarm, Chris had lost a lot of blood, so Johnny did the only thing he could to stop the bleeding - he thrust his fist into Chris's gaping wound, keeping it there for over half an hour.

Close Up spoke to Johnny about the experience.
