Once upon a time Waitangi Day was marked by controversy with clashes between Maori and Pakeha routinely expected.
These days though the national day is a pretty tame affair.
Things way down south however are done a little differently because on Stewart Island black versus white is very much alive and well.
Every year locals mark Waitangi Day with a Maori versus Pakeha game of rugby league, it's been a tradition for more than a quarter of a century.
Politically incorrect? Racist perhaps? Daniel Faitaua finds out.
