They say it is the largest winter sports event outside the Winter Olympics, and it is happening right here in New Zealand.

The inaugural Winter Games start this Friday. Organisers say more than 800 athletes from 32 countries will take part in a variety of winter sports.

The event has attracted some of the world's top skiers, all wanting to improve their world rankings ahead of next year's Winter Olympics.

Among those is a Kiwi who came within millimetres of losing his Olympic dream.
