To be a beautiful mermaid gracefully swimming through water and splashing a tail is the fantasy of many little girls.

But when an Auckland woman sent a casual email to film producers Weta Workshop she never dreamed she would one day be doing just that.

In what is thought to be a world-first, the double amputee now has a mermaid's tail to help her swim.
