Christmas spending is down, according to electronic transaction company Paymark.

It's no where near the more than $4b spent through the Paymark network in the weeks before Christmas last year.

Spokesman Paul Whiston says it's been a slow start with $1.76b spending in the first two weeks of the month.

He says the actual spending value remains relatively flat, which could have been impacted by the lower petrol prices .

Whiston says there certainly hasn't been a surge but feels that may happen closer to Christmas.
