Many of New Zealand's leading private venture capital investors, angel investors, entrepreneurs and companies will gather in Auckland this week for New Zealand Investment Week.
The week's series of events are aimed at celebrating and educating Kiwis on business investment, says Colin McKinnon, executive director of the New Zealand Venture Capital Association (NZVCA).
"The engine of enterprise of enterprise in New Zealand as we know is privately owned businesses, and we need to see more innovation in that area. Innovation is the catalyst for growth and capital is the fuel for innovation," he says.
There are around 15 angel networks in New Zealand, yet angel investing something a lot of people do not know too much about.
McKinnon says angel investors invest their time, expertise and money in helping grow businesses of entrepreneurs.
While some small and medium enterprises in New Zealand may bemoan difficulties in raising capital, McKinnon says it is no more difficult here than it is in other economies, though it does come with its own challenges.
He says New Zealand is a small economy and a young industry in terms of private capital, particularly venture capital.
"We're small scale and sometimes that creates difficulty, particularly for those entrepreneurs that have an idea that needs some sort of domain experience or expertise that's not readily available in New Zealand," he says.
Attendees at New Zealand Investment Week include international
speakers and investors from Australia. Events range from the
Young Enterprise Awards in Wellington to an angel summit in
Queenstown.
