US free trade prospects uncertain

Barack Obama's election victory could affect the prospects of sealing a free trade deal for New Zealand and the United States.

The US is New Zealand's second largest trading partner, and last year accounted for $4.2 billion in exports.

The government struck a deal two months ago to start negotiations.

Unsuccessful presidential candidate John McCain was a committed supporter of the deal.
