There are words of caution from the Social Development Minister following some positive news on unemployment beneficiary numbers.

For the first time since 2008 more people have been recorded as going off the unemployment benefit than those applying for it.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says it is positive news given at one stage in the middle of the year there were an average of 1,300 people signing up for the dole every week.

However she says, while the result is positive, it is far too early to consider it a trend as there can be variations on weekly unemployment numbers.
