A telecommunications conference is the first time the whole industry has got together to talk about the future.
The two day Planet 2010 conference is the brainchild of the Telecommunications Industry Group and spokesman Rob Spray says they want to excite people.
He says the bold new plan to build a $900 million underwater broadband cable has added spice to the meeting and is further proof that the industry is growing.
Spray says the cable would be a "tough thing to do" but he told Corin Dann from NZI Business that it is "definitely achievable".
The first day of Planet 2010 is designed for business but the second day is open to the public and will feature a range of products and services.
Spray says there is a strong focus on start up New Zealand companies - especially new companies on the web and new technology in terms of consumer electronics, media and entertainment. The conference also looks at the evolution of social media and how businesses can start to leverage social media while looking at future possibilities including "what's the next surprise".
He says the industry profits when start up companies, especially web businesses, are successful and go global which is why Launchpad has instigated an annual competition to pick NZ's best start up company for each year. The winning company gets funding and support.
