Taupo is looking to its new $55 million five-star Hilton Lake Taupo to boost international tourism in the area.
The hotel, which opened on Tuesday, will employ 100 people and is focused on attracting international tourists.
It contains a refurbishment of the original Terraces Hotel, which was built in 1889. It now forms the Heritage Wing of the Hilton.
The hotel has 113 guest rooms, suites and apartments.
The opening of the hotel is the first stage of a development which will include conference facilities to open next year.
