Skycity's gaming profits have had a good start to the year, with revenues for January and February up on the same period last year.

In the company's interim report, CEO Nigel Morrison says revenues from the Australian casino operations are up over 14% in Australian dollars (20% in New Zealand dollars).

Morrison says gaming machine revenues in Auckland for the three months December to February are also up over 4% compared to the same period last year.

"While we continue to believe that our future performance will be influenced by how the New Zealand and Australian economies unfold, we are encouraged by our continuing revenue performance to February 2009," Morrison says.

Skycity's report did not give guidance on expected revenue for the current year.

In February, the company reported a $300,000 decline in its underlying half-year net profit after tax for the year ended 31 December 2008 to $55.6 million.

Morrison said the decline reflected increasing operational costs and the difficulty with generating revenue in a tough economic climate.

Skycity is about to rebrand its Auckland casino complex as a full entertainment complex that Morrison hopes will appeal to a wider range of people.
