The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has confirmed today that a probe has been launched into individuals linked to Auckland Transport.
The SFO says it has "reasonable grounds to believe that an offence involving serious or complex fraud may have been committed".
The investigation involved "alleged irregularities in the procurement of services", which ONE News understands were road maintenance contracts.
Acting Chief Executive for SFO, Simon McArley, said the matter had been referred to them by Auckland Transport following an internal investigation.
Several properties were searched yesterday as part of the investigation.
It is understood a former Auckland Transport employee is being investigated.
Last month, the Auckland Council controlled organisation fired an employee after an internal investigation found a "serious conflict of interest and performance issues".
