New Zealand's top entrepreneurs are gathering in Auckland on Thursday to shortlist their ideas on how to make New Zealand more productive.
One hundred entrepreneurs will take part in the New Zealand Entrepreneurial Summit, which comes after an OECD report revealed that New Zealand is among the most indebted economies in the developed world.
The summit has been pulled together by husband and wife entrepreneurs Sharon Hunter and Tenby Powell.
Summit organisers say they are worried many recessionary measures - such as the nine-day fortnight - reduce productivity at a time where it needs to be increased.
"I remember someone saying 'let's not let a good recession go to waste'.... if anything we need to be more aggressive, not less aggressive to grow this economy and grow our business," says summit organiser Andy Hamilton.
Hamilton says the idea is to distil a range of ideas put forward before the summit to the top five.
"New Zealand represents 0.1% of the world's GDP and our objective is to double that. And if we can get some of these ideas out and really grow New Zealand, then everybody's going to benefit," he says.
He believes the advantage of getting entrepreneurs together, rather than politicians or academics is that entrepreneurs tend to think differently and are adept at taking creative ideas and making money from them.
The summit will present Finance Minister Bill English with the top five ideas at the end of the day.
Organisers says the government does not have to act on the ideas
but will see a good return if it does.
