Retailers are expecting a big start to the New Year with most stores extending their Boxing Day clearances.
The Retailers' Association says it's usually very busy after Christmas and most shops are open for New Year's Day.
Spokesman Barry Hellberg says there is usually plenty of Christmas product to shift and it's a very good time of year for consumers.
However New Year's Day trade is often influenced by the weather. Helllberg says if it is not warm and sunny, more people are likely to go shopping.
Hellberg expects 2010 to be a much more positive year for recession-weary retailers.
