Retail sales have failed to rally, latest figures show, with the biggest decreases in fuel and accomodation.

Figures released by Statistics New Zealand on Wednesday show that the seasonally adjusted total retail sales for November 2008 increased by less than 1% from October.

While vehicle sales increased 6.9%, they were offset by the decline in fuel retailing of 7.3%.

Retail sales, not including vehicle-related industries, increased by 0.3%, driven mostly by supermarket and grocery retail sales. The biggest decrease was in accommodation which was down 6.6%.

Overall, retail sales are down 1% from January last year, reversing an upward trend that began in May 1998.
