The government is establishing a Productivity Commission which it expects to be in place within about a year.
The commission is part of National's coalition agreement with Act and will cost around $5 million a year to run with around 20 staff. Act leader Rodney Hide has enthusiastically endorsed National for its support.
Hide says the great thing about working with John Key and his ministers is that they have been genuine in looking at the issues Act has put on the table and have agreed that a Productivity Commission will be good for New Zealand.
The Finance Minister says the money will come from across 29 government departments as will most of the staff. Bill English says NZ has to lift its productivity after having a lopsided and under performing economy in the past five to six years.
He says the commission will be an independent and arm's length body.
