Postie Plus updated shareholders on moves it is taking to reduce packaging in its supply chain.

"You may be aware that we use a re-usable bag to dispatch our stock to our branches rather than cartons," chief executive Ron Boskell told shareholders at the annual meeting.

The company was ready to take the use of these bags to the next stage.

"We are looking at bringing this famous green stock bag into New Zealand with our apparel stock already inside it, rather than unpacking from carton to bag as we do at present.

"It will not be easy and from what I'm told it will be a world first, but it is a project worth the sweat to attain it," he said.

The company would eventually upstream distribution into China.

"When we move to this next step, it will see our initial deliveries to our branch network going direct to store, bypassing the need to separate, allocate and arrange dispatch from Christchurch. As a result, there will be less cartons being brought into the country; so less waste to deal with and less cost to the business."
