The fur industry is concerned New Zealand is missing out of millions of dollars in potential earnings from possum fur.
Textile New Zealand, the body that represents the $100 million possum fur industry, is talking to the Department of Conservation about doubling the number of commercially harvested possums.
At the moment DoC gives access to only limited areas for the gathering of poisoned possums, so many dead possums go to waste as a result.
The fur industry wants to double its intake to more than three million possums a year.
