Ports of Auckland has been recognised for its environmental management initiatives in the Green Ribbon Awards.
The awards recognised individuals, businesses and organisations for making an "outstanding contribution" to protecting the environment.
Environment Minister Nick Smith presented the awards during a ceremony in parliament on Thursday night.
Ports of Auckland was one of the first ports in Australasia to measure and audit greenhouse gas emissions and its carbon footprint.
It also has a system to reduce electricity and fuel waste, a lighting efficiency programme, hybrid diesel-electric straddle carriers and rail connection between ports.
Other winners included:
- Travis Wetland Trust in Christchurch for its successful
restoration
- Hawke's Bay's Garth Eyles for his work on land use capability and
soil conservation
- Ashburton District Council for its Albert Street/Geoff Geering
Drive Eco-subdivision
- Tommy Long, Year 11 student at Botany Downs Secondary College
where he established environmental awards
- Rueben Porter on behalf of Nga Hapu o Ahipara for initiating
projects on environmental guardianship in Kaitaia
- Ngati Whatua o Orakei for providing greater awareness of zero
waste management at a free public concert at Okahu Bay.
