Container operations at the Port of Auckland will based at its expanded Fergusson container terminal as of Monday.

Ports of Auckland says the move is the biggest operational change at the port in 10 years and will bring together container ship and stevedoring staff currently split between the Fergusson and Bledisloe container terminals.

Chief financial officer Wayne Thompson said the terminal reorganisation, in combination with Ports of Auckland's newly settled collective employment agreement and recent sale of Queens Wharf, will eliminate duplicated overheads and infrastructure.

General manager for operations Grant Jorey says there will be no compulsory redundancies as part of the move, though the head count will reduce by 33 as a result of internal redeployments and voluntary redundancies.

The Bledisloe terminal will continue to be used for port activities including containerised, non-containerised cargo and Customs activities
