A small Otago community has lost its fight to keep golden arches out of its neighbourhood.

The Dunedin City Council has granted fast food chain McDonalds resource consent to build a restaurant and McCafe in Mosgiel, near Dunedin.

The decision has dismayed local residents who fought the resource consent application.

They say the construction of a McDonalds will negatively affect the quiet neighbourhood with the glare of a neon sign, increased noise and traffic and anti-social behaviour of patrons.

They have until late January to appeal the council's decision.
