November new car registrations of 4486 were down 21% on the previous month and were 8.4% lower than last year.

The figures contrast with Australian data for November released yesterday which showed 85,833 new vehicles were sold, a rise of 6.2% from October and19.9% from a year ago.

There was a rise of 44% in the sale of sports utility vehicles in Australia in November from a year ago.

The Motor Industry Association said the new car market in New Zealand tipped quite dramatically in November 2008 in response to the economic downturn and collapse of car finance companies.

Year-to-date figures show the Toyota Corolla is the country's best-selling model with sales of 4335 units sold, ahead of the Holden Commodore with 2705 units and the Suzuki Swift with 2174 units.
