It may have been a tough year but companies can still celebrate Christmas without breaking the bank, recruitment specialist Robert Half New Zealand says.

Robert Half spokesperson Megan Alexander says many companies may think they can not afford a staff Christmas party, but she says cutting the celebration altogether, rather than being creative and looking for low-cost options, would be a mistake.

Alexander says it has been a stressful year for employees and it is important employers recognise that.

Robert Half says it has noticed an increase in inquiries from stressed employees who are starting to search for alternatives because they feel their bosses have not recognised their work this year.

"Something as simple as not holding any sort of Christmas celebration may be the tipping point for other staff who are toying with looking for another job in the New Year," says Alexander.

Alexander says low-cost solutions could include a beach picnic, a pot-luck dinner, cocktails and nibbles, or a barbecue.

But, she says if companies are cutting back on celebrations, it is important to communicate that to staff.

"Tell them that budget cuts mean you might not be able to celebrate in the same way as you have done in previous years, but that you still want to recognise how much they have helped the business during difficult times," she says.

Alexander also says staff may also be able to help with suggestions and decision-making for celebrations.
