Dairy giant Fonterra is about to switch on a new multi-million dollar milk powder machine that will benefit South Island farmers.
The new plant at Edendale in Southland cost $212 million and will be one of the largest in the world.
It took 14 months to build and is one of three milk dryers on the Edendale site.
The ED4 was built in response to the steadily growing number of dairy farms in the South Island and will take the site's peak processing capacity to over 15 million litres per day.
"It means to them (the farmers) that Fonterra is processing their milk in the most efficient plant in the world," says Keith Mason Edendale Site Manager.
Complete with state of the art equipment, the plant will eventually be operated by only three people.
"Technically we're going into realms where we've never been before, while this is just a step from our previous plant, it is a number of areas where we've had to stop, think and try something new," says engineer Dean Shivlock.
The ED4 will start shipping produce all around the world by early October.
