Rabobank has joined many other New Zealand companies in announcing large donations towards recovery efforts in earthquake-affected Christchurch and the surrounding regions.

Rabobank general manager New Zealand Ben Russell said today the bank is donating $100,000 to the Salvation Army Canterbury Earthquake Appeal.

The Salvation Army is conducting a range of short and medium-term relief activities, including meals and accommodation for affected people, counselling services and distribution of care packages to many households, and we fully support its wonderful work at this difficult time for the community, Russell said.

Rabobank's Don Kennedy said the banks team had made contact with most of its rural and business customers in the worst-affected areas.

While most appear to have escaped serious damage to their business operations, the bank is more than willing to adopt flexible and supportive measures to assist clients who experience financial hardship as a result of the earthquake, he said.

This includes, but is not limited to, full payment of interest for any broken term deposits (both for RaboDirect and for other deposits with Rabobank).

Mr Kennedy said Rabobank would work on a case-by-case basis with affected clients to support them through this disaster.

Other companies who have contributed include dairy giant Fonterra, which has pledged  $1 million to the local Mayoral Relief Fund.

"There is a massive job to be done. We are grateful that our local farmers and our sites have come through relatively unscathed as this means we can put our resources into the community where help is needed most, " says chairman Sir Henry Van der Heyden.

Fonterra CEO Andrew Ferrier said that in addition to the donation, Fonterra would continue to provide practical help through local staff and equipment including using milk tankers to deliver water.

Ferrier says Fonterra's manufacturing sites at Clandeboyne, Takaka, Brightwater and Kaikoura were operating and processing milk.

Pyne Gould Corporation (PGC), on behalf of its subsidiaries MARAC and Perpetual, says it intends donating $50,000 to the Christchurch mayoral relief fund to help the region get back on its feet.

PGC has its head office in Christchurch and employs 65 people in the region.

ANZ Bank is donating $1 million to the Mayoral Relief Fund to support Canterbury residents and businesses.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Steven Fyfe said in addition to the donation, the ANZ and National Banks will also offer a special package of assistance for personal and business customers impacted by the earthquake.

BNZ bank is also donating $1 million and says it has a customer assistance programme underway.

Westpac bank is establishing a Canterbury Care Fund with $1 million in conjunction with the Salvation Army. Westpac is setting aside a $1 billion loan pool to help in the rebuilding of the city.

Telecommunications company TelstraClear says it will give $100,000 to relief efforts.

Gull New Zealand will be donating $10,000 to the Christchurch mayoral fund.

Electricity company Main Power has donated $150,000 to help the people of Kaiapoi. Waimakariri District Mayor, Ron Keating, says another unnamed business has donated $50,000.
