New Zealand consumers can access prepaid mobile phone plans at lower prices than the OECD average since 2degrees came along, the Commerce Commission says.

The findings are part of the commission's telecommunications markets report for the first half of 2009.

The commission says before 2degrees' entry in August this year, the best ranking for a New Zealand prepaid plan was 26 out of 30, with pricing at more than one and a half times the OECD average.

The establishment of technologically compatible mobile networks has also made it easier for consumers to switch between networks without having to change phones and numbers.

The commission says the number of consumers switching between networks more than tripled in August and September.

Commerce Commission telecommunications commissioner Ross Patterson says prepaid plans are important to Kiwi consumers as around two thirds of mobile subscribers use prepaid.

"Consumers now have more choice and better pricing in the prepaid mobile market," he says.
