The Auckland City Council is encouraging Metrowater to give some of its projected surplus back to customers.
Metrowater's half yearly financial results show it's $5.7 million ahead of budget, largely as a result of higher than expected water consumption.
Finance and Strategy Committee chairman Douglas Armstrong says the council can't enforce any decision like this on Metrowater, even though it's a Council Controlled Organisation.
He says that's a model he supports, because they can't ring up every Monday morning and change the direction of a billion dollar company on a political will
Armstrong says the board of directors on Metrowater have better insight into what's best for the company and politicians shouldn't be able to interfere with CCOs at a whim.
