State-owned power generator and retailer Meridian Energy is to go ahead with construction of a $200 million wind farm near Raglan capable of supplying 30,000 homes.

The 64 megawatt wind farm 30km west of Hamilton, known as Project Te Uku, is being constructed in partnership with Waikato electricity distribution company WEL Networks.

WEL Networks is owned by a community trust, WEL Energy Trust. Its distribution system connects 80,000 customers to the national grid.

"We are confident that the project represents a sound investment proposition," says Meridian chief executive Tim Lusk.

The project had portfolio benefits to Meridian given that the company was a South Island-based generator.

WEL chief executive Julian Elder has welcomed the decision saying it is a positive move for the environment and the local community.
