Food prices in May were fractionally higher than April, led mainly by higher prices for bread, cakes and biscuits.
Statistics New Zealand says food prices for the month were up 0.3% on April, and showed an annual increase of 6.8% on May last year.
The main upwards movement in prices came from the grocery food subgroup, up 1%, as bread and cake and biscuits rose 2.6% and 2.9% respectively.
Price increases in the subgroup were partly offset by yoghurt which was down 5.7%.
Non-alcoholic beverages - particularly a 2.1% increase in soft drink prices - restaurant and ready-to-eat meals also contributed to the overall increase in food prices.
The only subgroup to show a decline was fruit and vegetables, down 2.6%, led by decreases in the price of in-season produce such as mandarins and kiwifruit.
Prices for vegetables were down 8% over the year to May - the largest annual fall in vegetable prices since June 2007.
Prices for meat, chicken and fish were largely unchanged,
although beef was down 6.7%.
