One of New Zealand's biggest IT conferences is underway in Auckland.

Microsoft's three-day Tech-Ed conference is seen as an important opportunity for the industry to get together to discuss the latest trends in computer technology.

The company's New Zealand CEO Kevin Akhurst says 2,100 people are expected to attend the event over the week.

He says the main focus will be on innovation, and through that helping people to raise productivity and save money.

"If you think of everything that has happened in recent times with the recession, making sure people are actually investing in skills, capability and growing the ways in which they can help customers to actually save money, that's really important."

Issues will include Windows 7, cloud computing, security and unified communication.

"Investment in IT is largely in ways in which you can save money. So if you are thinking about travel for instance, investing in unification means that you can reduce the travel budgets of your company and that's good investment in technology," says Akhurst.
