Lyttelton Port at Christchurch has secured a multi-million dollar deal with Fonterra.
The contract is to transport dairy products from Fonterra's large Clandeboye plant in South Canterbury through the container terminal, rather than Timaru, for five years.
Previously the port handled very little volume from Clandeboye.
Port CEO Peter Davie said the new Fonterra contract could provide as much as 10% of the port's container volumes when the next export season gets going
The new contract also involves a partnership with Kiwirail to use rail rather than road more often for exports in the central South Island.
Davie says Fonterra would also be able to access a greater range of shipping lines through Lyttelton Port.
Clandeboye is 32km north of Timaru and is one of Fonterra's two biggest South Island dairy factories.
