Business confidence is perking up, but only slightly, according to a bank survey.

The Bank of New Zealand confidence survey shows a small rise in those expecting things to improve in the next 12 months, to 13% net positive this month, from 3% in December.

Confidence peaked in the middle of last year when a net 60% expected better times ahead.

The latest lift in confidence was the second in a row and was in line with generally improving indicators overseas, BNZ said.

Those surveyed were still worried about the delay in rebuilding Christchurch, the lack of consumer spending growth and the high New Zealand dollar, but "the results overall suggest slowly improving economic growth is probable this year," BNZ said.

Most comments in the retail sector remained negative, as they had been for many months.
