Labour is accusing the government of coming up short on its economic plans.

The criticism comes as the government acknowledges around 1,000 people are currently signing up for the unemployment benefit every week.

Labour leader Phil Goff says it is now clear the government's Job Summit was, at best, a "talkfest", and at worst, a gimmick that has failed to address unemployment.

He says of the three big ideas, one has fallen over completely and the second, the nine-day fortnight , has saved fewer jobs than are now being lost every two days.

Goff says the third idea, the cycleway , has not created any jobs at all.

However, Finance Minister Bill English describes the criticism as ridiculous.

He says the government has got a large stimulus plan underway, building infrastructure, new schools, as well as its insulation package.
