With the recession squeezing people's pay packets, will more workers take a payment holiday from the Kiwisaver scheme?
Yvonne Davie from fund monitoring agency Fundsource says people don't appear to be taking a break from contributions.
She says of the around one million members, only around 2% are on a contribution holiday.
"I think what we're seeing is that people have adjusted their expenditure to accommodate their Kiwisaver contributions," she says.
At the moment, New Zealand workers in the scheme contribute a minimum of 4% from their pay packet, although this will drop to 2% on April 1.
Aound 25% of eligible New Zealanders have joined the scheme, and Davie believes the lower payment threshold may encourage more people to join.
"I think what it will do is certainly make it a lot more affordable for a lot more New Zealanders," says Davie.
At this stage, fund managers are not worried that there may be a drop-off in Kiwisaver contributions.
Davie says Fundsource saw around $1.7 billion going to Kiwisaver to the end of December 2008. Of this, around $435 million was for the December quarter, so there are still good flows coming through.
