An international study has found New Zealanders are among the least concerned about the recession, but we're still cutting spending and switching brands.

The study of 20 countries was carried out by research company Synovate.

It shows less than a third of New Zealanders expect their personal economics situation to worsen, compared to 34% of Australians and 46% of British people.

Spokesman Jonathan Dodd says our main worry is job security.

He says people are saving money where they can by growing their own vegetables and switching to cheaper products, but generally seem relatively benign about the recession.

Dodd says a lot of people will be able to maintain a good income, and buy things at the luxury end of the market .

And he says discount retailers and those at the cheaper end of the market should also be OK.

Dodd says businesses need to recognise customers are going to switch to cheaper brands, and be able to respond to the change.

He says retailers facing competition from cheaper rivals have to really think about what they're offering.
