Some businesses are toughing the recession out by ignoring it and turning to good ole-Kiwi ingenuity.
Despite the hard times many are doing surprisingly well by knuckling down and just getting on with it.
Proud Westies Megan and Marcus East are in the marketing business and say they're not about to let the doom and gloom of hard times phase them.
"Recession is the time you work harder, go hard, you got to have the confidence in yourself because if you don't believe in yourself who else is going to believe in you," says Marcus West.
With a staff of 10 and a million dollar turnover, MarketingWorks
design props and Christmas displays for shopping malls and
companies like Griffins.
And they say its time Kiwis got back in the driver's seat.
"You reach a certain point and you hit a brick wall. There is very little support, there is very little encouragement and I think a bit of the Kiwi number eight wire needs to come back in to it to make simple and be supportive," says Megan East.
Another company driving itself is a niche eco tourist company, Bush and Beach.
A spokesperson for the company says its much more news worthy when a big company does something and is much easier for them to get the coverage but says it is small business that is the backbone of New Zealand and should be recognised more.
Bush and Beach sell a product that is virtually in New Zealand's back yard, taking small tour groups to experience the New Zealand bush from beaches and nature sites to tourists dipping their toes in the Tasman Sea. That's what is keeping the company afloat.
The company says people are looking for smaller tour groups and believe they have a winning formula in place to make a profit.
