Job prospects for thousands of young Australians have been given a boost with trainees guaranteed 10% of work on the government's stimulus and infrastructure projects.

In February, the Australian government announced a $AU42 million stimulus package of which nearly $US29 billion was slated for work on infrastructure, schools and housing as part of the government's focus on protecting the economy.

After winning the backing of state and territory governments, the quota scheme will see thousands of new apprenticeships and traineeships created.

"The best thing you can do in a time of global recession is give a young person an apprenticeship," Employment Participation Minister Mark Arbib told Channel 9's Today show.
