A South Auckland furniture maker has gone into receivership, leaving over 100 New Zealand and Australian staff members unemployed, according to the union for the manufacturing sector.
Criterion, who make office and home furniture, told the workers on Tuesday at its East Tamaki factory the company was shutting down and the Australian receivers, KordaMentha, were being brought in, the Engineers, Printers and Manufacturers (EPMU) union said today.
EPMU, which represents workers at the company, said staff members have been put into a difficult situation.
"They are now suddenly without an income and have no idea if they'll get their outstanding wages and holiday pay", said Louisa Jones, EPMU National Industry Organiser.
"It's also another body blow for our economy when a well-established exporting company like Criterion shuts its doors."
Jones said the union will be working with the company's recievers to make sure workers get their full legal entitlements such as wages and holiday pay.
