Guest night numbers in January were the highest recorded since the survey began in July 1996, Statistics New Zealand says.

Overnight stays in commercial accommodation were up 4% to 4.4 million compared with the previous January.

January is traditionally the peak month for guest nights and this year there were 8% more international guests and 2% more domestic guests.

But business statistics manager Kathy Connolly says although there have been large increases in international guests the numbers are similar to those reached in January
2008.

Eleven of the 12 regions recorded more guest nights this January with Waikato, Canterbury and Nelson/Marlborough/Tasman showing the largest increases.

Taranaki/Manawatu-Wanganui was the only region with fewer guest nights over the same period.

The Accommodation Survey records guests staying in hotels, motels, backpackers, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month and all four had more guest nights in January 2010.
